CHICAGO, Illinois – October 25, 2018 – SplitSimple.com, an organization focused on assisting Chicago and Denver based individuals with uncontested divorce mediation, announced the winner of their $500 scholarship contest held over the summer. Kaitlin Ford, a senior at Daemen College in Amherst, NY, impressed the panel of judges with her heartfelt and frank essay explaining what inspired her to study social work. “Ever since I can remember, I have wanted so badly to advocate for people who cannot advocate for themselves,” writes Ford in her moving essay, which chronicles key events in her life that have led her to choosing social work as her life’s passion, including a mission trip to New Orleans as a teenager, her experiences as an advocate for the homeless, and witnessing first hand the devastating impact of addiction.
In addition to discussing the events that inspired her to become a social worker, Ford explores the puzzling reactions she gets to friends and relatives when she tells them she is studying to become a social worker. “It seems like every time I tell someone I am going to be a social worker they ask why instead of saying something positive,” Ford writes in the opening paragraph of her winning composition.
SplitSimple founder Chris Griffith created the scholarship opportunity as a way to help make college expenses more affordable for those who have chosen to help others by becoming social workers. Griffith and his panel of scholarship judges selected Ford as the recipient of the $500 scholarship based on the quality of her essay and her demonstrable desire to help others. She won out over dozens of other applicants.
Participants in the scholarship contest were required to hold a GPA of 3.0 or higher, as well as submit a letter of recommendation and unofficial transcript of their grades along with a 500-1000 word essay answering the question, “What Inspired Me to Study Social Work?”
